Holocaust Memorial Day 2021

Without history, we would never know about the ‘blood and tears’ of the past – way before our time, in the city with its tranquillity that we can feel today. On Holocaust Memorial Day today and on every 27th January, to always remember and honour the victims and the survivors, we learn and embrace the value of the struggle and survival, which also remind us about the darkness in humanity, hope, strength, and as the theme for this year, how we can ‘Be the light in the darkness’.

Hosted by Newcastle City Council in partnership with local communities and organisations for the collaborative online programme, it’s an honour to have been a part of the Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration 2021 project in Newcastle. In an interview with Peter Sagar, Newcastle and the northeast are portrayed to have played significant roles in the history of immigration and human rights struggle. The history encompassed the Roma Holocaust, the development of the Roma community on Tyneside, and their involvement in the wider community nowadays.

As Newcastle City Council Deputy leader Joyce McCarty stated, purple lights will illuminate Newcastle Civic Centre from 24th – 27th January 2021. It will represent the official colour of Holocaust Memorial Day, a symbol of a guiding ‘light in the darkness’. In light of having been through a recent challenging situation in the pandemic, let’s also support each other’s, share the love, be the light and hope.
