Energy Transition

Climate change is critical. Lowering carbon emissions towards the net zero by 2050, a series of efforts have been made, from academics, government, and professionals to individuals.

Major oil and gas companies are in energy transition with recent renewable energy projects. Supporting the UK’s commitment in the net zero by 2050bp sets its new strategy. Newcastle University joins the climate change panel in the North East; most universities in the UK have divested in fossil fuel to invest in renewable energy. Embarking the COP26, global organisation and experts actively support the global agenda, contributing to policymaking, sharing knowledge, best practice and technology.

Many unavoidable questions occur, how is the future of petroleum engineers? Will it be possible to use existing oil and gas production facilities for renewables? In some countries whereas coal is still a significant industry, will it be possible to fulfill the global net zero agenda and commitment?

Learning from a leading energy company, global organisation, government and petroleum engineer, the following interview is featuring Tor Fjaeran, President World Petroleum Council; Equinor, an energy company from Norway represented by Nora Callander, Leader Sustainability & Climate Communications, and Erik Haaland, the Senior Advisor to the CEO (former Communication Manager of International Development, Production & Exploration); Ariana Soemanto, Head of Communications of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy; and Ali Papi, an oil & gas company professional with MSc degree in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London.
